Coaching is sustainable form of CPD which we want to promote in GEMS schools.
What is Coaching?
During the process the coach aims to do three things:
● Assists the planning and teaching of lessons
● Sets up an interpersonal process of analysing and reflecting on lessons which can be internalised by the coached teacher so that they can continue their own development;
● Creates a climate in which it becomes normal to take risks, reflect, learn, develop and share expertise.
One of the most common methodologies used in coaching -
the GROW model: goal setting, helping to identify issues, where the teacher would like to be and how they are going to get there.
One of the great strengths of a coaching relationship is that it enables the teacher to take control of their own development and to be in charge of identifying the issues that they want to explore.
What does research evidence tell us?
● Coaching offers significant benefits for practitioners and pupils
● Coaching is very effective in leading to sustained improvements in learning and teaching
● Coaching benefits both coachee and coach
● Effective teachers become good
● Good teachers become excellent
● Coaching does motivate
